January 2022 News

What has January meant to you? Did you complete Dry-January, Vegan-uary or perhaps RED (Run Every Day) January… Or maybe you just got through each day as best you could. If you can find one achievement for the month, then grab hold of it with both hands and be proud of it.

In fact, each and every one of you are remarkable in your own way and please do remember that. Also, remember to tell each other too – it’s often a kind word that helps people through hard times. Use your runs to clear your heads or catch up with friends, run for you and your mental health this month – and try to take that forward throughout the year.

Congratulations to everyone who has already completed an event this year, parkrun, time trial or a race. We had a good turnout for the Canterbury 10 miler and I’ve seen many of you attending parkruns and a couple of other events. Race results are here and the time trial results are here.

When I say Masters, I’m of that age that it usually is followed by “of the Universe” – but on this occasion it is the Masters Track and Field League! This year we are hosting 2 male and 1 female team, competing across 4 meetings:

  • Sutcliffe Park – 9th May
  • Erith – 17th June
  • Tonbridge – 15th July
  • Central Park – 29th July

Our Masters Team captains are Martin Smith, Sarah Dodds and Andy Whitnell and they’ve asked me to put some feelers out to anyone interested in taking part. You don’t have to be a track and field athlete, complete a 10 second 100 metres, jump 2 meters in the high jump or throw a discuss 35 metres. Everyone is welcome. Whether you come first, last or somewhere in the middle you will find that all clubs competing are supportive and encouraging to all competitors.

The only requirements are that you are 35 years old or over – and that you’re willing to try your best. If you want anymore information please reach out to one of the club captains or to me and I will forward your details on. Our Masters webpage is here.

Some dates/reminders for you now – pencil them in your diaries and look out for further information on them:

  • Bexley parkrun 10th birthday – 5th February (run starts at 9am). One of the other strings to my bow if you never knew is that I am the Event Director at Bexley parkrun and have been on the team since it was created back in 2012. Everyone is invited to come along and run, jog or walk the event every week but if you’re not a regular or haven’t been before/for a while, why not come along as see how things are going down there. Just don’t forget your barcode!
  • Bexley AC Breakfast Run – 13th February (first distance leaves at 8:15am). Our annual run of 6, 10 or 15 mile distances will begin/end at Wilmington Memorial Hall and breakfast will be there afterwards also. You are requested to pre-register, so full address, details and link to pay is here.
  • Myra Garrett 10km and Fun Run – We have provisionally booked this to be held in Danson Park on the 17th July. More info/volunteer requests to follow.

Last thing, please look out next month for our membership renewal email. This covers your annual England Athletics subscription (inc. Competition Licence), allows you to purchase your training pass, priority to club social and championship events, and further discounts towards races and kit with limited suppliers.
