Southern men and women team results – great start !
Bexley Triumphant in first Southern Men’s Meeting n- By Shaun Medlen, Team Captain
With a under strength squad, Bexley’s Senior Men team travelled down to Windsor for the season opener. Battling the elements, filling in the squad where need and strong opposition, the team managed to record their first victory, narrowly beating Windsor, Slough and Eton by 1 point.
The match started with a double win from former Welsh international Graham Holder and team captain Shaun Medlen in the A and B Hammer. This was followed by a win in the A Long Jump by Paul Slater, who also gain wins in the A Triple Jump, B 110m Hurdles and filled in for the 100m, High Jump and 4x100m, which gained him the Man of the Match award for the day. Wins were also gained from Chris Stanton in the A Shot Putt, A 110m Hurdles and B Discus; Joe Gunton in the B Javelin; Martin Jenner in the B 400m Hurdles; and Billy Somogyi in the B 1500m.
It was also a welcome return to action for Jamie Walker and Michael Hobson, with Jamie making his first appearance in 2 years in the A 1500m and Michael admirably filling in the B 200m for the team. A special mention must go to Glen Butler, who ran the B 100m to get a point, then ran a brilliant 5000m to come second!
Overall, the team performed brilliantly and, given there so many gaps in the team, to achieve a win was a fantastic start to the season. Well done lads!
Although a full report has been done, many congratulations to Bexley’s Senior Women team, who also won their first Southern Women’s League match as well. A great start all round!
Next match is Saturday 19th May at Erith Stadium.
