Bexley AC Tigers Newsletter – May 2010
TIGERS ROAR
We are looking forward to an exciting and, hopefully, sunny Summer ahead. There’s a lot going on over the next few months as we start the summer season of athletics. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Jane Corbett who has kindly volunteered to assist in the Club House providing refreshments on Sunday mornings.
A reminder that the latest information on Tigers training sessions can be found on our website, www.bexleyac.co.uk.
Tigers – change of training times – we are now starting at 10am (from 30 May)
Due to the introduction of QuadKids (see below) and to ensure we make the most of the good weather, from 30 May Tigers training will start promptly at 10.00am. Could you ensure that your children are here ready to start the warm-up session at 10am. Warm-up is a vital part of the training session; it helps to prevent injury and prepares the athletes for the training session.
Bexley AC 10k race & 3k fun run – Sunday 23 May – NO TIGERS TRAINING
A reminder that the annual races organised by Bexley AC are taking place in Danson Park on Sunday 23 May. There will not be any Tigers training at Erith - the Tigers training session will be the 3k race which costs £3 to enter and starts at 10.00am. An entry form is available from the Clubhouse or through link on website or you may enter on the day. We look forward to seeing you there.
League competitions
Bexley Ac competes in two leagues for the U13/U15/U17 age groups, Kent Young Athlete League and National Young Athletes League. This means that any Tigers who are 11 or will be 11 by 31st August 2010 (year 6) will be eligible to compete. The competitions are the ideal chance to compete and make the most of all the hard work put into training but most important of all, they are fun!
For Tigers who are over 9 and under 11 there is an opportunity to compete in selected U11 races in the Kent Young Athletes League. Numbers are limited to 3 athletes from each Club and will be filled on a “first come – first served” basis.
If you are interested please speak to me. Team managers make the team selection and will contact parents nearer the competition date, via text or e-mail.

QuadKids competition
We are pleased to announce that we will shortly be launching QuadKids competition for the Tigers on Sunday mornings. QuadKids is a team-based competition where each athlete does four events (sprint, run, long jump and a throw) in teams of 8 (ideally 4 boys and 4 girls). It is primarily targeted at young athletes between the ages of 7 and 13.
It is a nationally proven athletics concept endorsed and supported by England Athletics and forms part of their national competition framework. We will provide further details of the first event in the next few weeks.
Club News
Clubmark
Bexley AC is working towards accreditation to Clubmark accreditation scheme. Clubmark is supported by England Athletics and is a quality mark to show that sports clubs are high-quality, welcoming and safe environments for young people to take up sport, improve their talents and initiate and maintain lifelong participation in sport.
It is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections; and, is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. Achieving Clubmark status will ensure Bexley AC is nationally recognised as providing a ‘safe, effective and child friendly’ club environment.
We are currently going through the accreditation process, working closely with our England Athletics co-ordinator, and will be formally assessed by England Athletics at the end of July. If you have any queries please contact the Clubmark Co-ordinator, Karen Winfield.
