Bexley Triumphant in first Southern Men’s Meeting n- By Shaun Medlen, Team Captain

With a under strength squad, Bexley’s Senior Men team travelled down to Windsor for the season opener. Battling the elements, filling in the squad where need and strong opposition, the team managed to record their first victory, narrowly beating Windsor, Slough and Eton by 1 point.

The match started with a double win from former Welsh international Graham Holder and team captain Shaun Medlen in the A and B Hammer. This was followed by a win in the A Long Jump by Paul Slater, who also gain wins in the A Triple Jump, B 110m Hurdles and filled in for the 100m, High Jump and 4x100m, which gained him the Man of the Match award for the day. Wins were also gained from Chris Stanton in the A Shot Putt, A 110m Hurdles and B Discus; Joe Gunton in the B Javelin; Martin Jenner in the B 400m Hurdles; and Billy Somogyi in the B 1500m.

It was also a welcome return to action for Jamie Walker and Michael Hobson, with Jamie making his first appearance in 2 years in the A 1500m and Michael admirably filling in the B 200m for the team. A special mention must go to Glen Butler, who ran the B 100m to get a point, then ran a brilliant 5000m to come second!

Overall, the team performed brilliantly and, given there so many gaps in the team, to achieve a win was a fantastic start to the season. Well done lads!

Although a full report has been done, many congratulations to Bexley’s Senior Women team, who also won their first Southern Women’s League match as well. A great start all round!

Next match is Saturday 19th May at Erith Stadium.

A test event was held at the olympic stadium in Stratford over the weekend of the 5th & 6th of May with the British Universities and College athletics championships taking place. This gave some of our kit carriers a chance to practice in advance of their duties at the forthcoming Olympics. By all accounts it was a success…although very cold and wet !

Our Paralympic young games maker team also had their training and test event 7th and 8th May. They were trained as a ‘tie down team’ and also worked behind the scenes. It was very tiring but very exciting and rewarding.

Below are pictures of the kit carriers.

On the 15th April we competed in our first league match at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford. With many youngsters putting on the orange vest for the first time. Being the first event of the season and a revised league with even more teams, we expected a busy madness for the first couple of hours and we certainly got it. I’ve put the report in age group order, mentioning who competed Highlighting only very notable performances, so please don’t disappointed if I don’t go into detail – But we are all proud of you. The full results can be found at www.kcaa.org.uk/ the county web site.
Under 13’s Girls, after last year when we usually only had 1 competing, today we had 4 young ladies. Emily Johnson, Marianne Bullen, Annabel Field & Eliza Lawrence were up for anything
Under 15 Girls, this was our strongest most experienced team, Abi Alagbaiye, Katie Butterworth, Kerri Johnson, Harley Wooler, Olivia Bailey, Monika Faulkner, Eleanor Winch, Victoria Blincoe and making her debut from OZ Madeleine Vaz. Notably Joanne Okusanya (Grade 2 in the 100m in 12.98 & G3 in the Shot)
Under 13 boys, like the girls in this age group a young team Dan Walton, Jason Okusanya, Ayo Olagbaiye Robert Lawrence, Dan Walton & Ozzie Jeremy Vaz
Under 15 boys, missing a couple with injuries but Harry Jarvis, Okiki Olugunna, Luc Legon, Joshu Masters, & Cameron Lyttle( grade 3 100m in 12.00) dead. done us well.
So well done to a very young team overall (2/3 off our athletes in the lower half of their age brackets) the sprit was suburb and all those there was impressed by our team, with both our teams in div 1, the future is looking very bright but we do need everyone to compete.
Thanks to fellow team managers Tony Garrett & Ellen Brown and to all parents who helped & all the officials at the Kent league. Our next match for under 13’s & 15’s is
National Young Athletics League 6th May Home at Erith
National Young Athletics League 20th May Home at Sutcliffe Park – Eltham
Kent League 4th June at Norman Park, Bromley (Monday)
National Young Athletics League 17th June at Walthamstow
Kent League 1st July Home at Erith
Good luck and see you there Kevin Winch

Dear All

We have three dates for the Kent Young Athlete’s league, the first is at Ashford on the 15th April, 2nd at Norman Park on the 4th June & the final at home on the 1st July.
This year 3 of us are running the teams again myself, & Tony Garret and Ellen Brown.
We hope to get not just the best teams out (Girls & Boys are both in Div 1) but get all our youngsters involved in wearing the orange vest, developing a great team sprit and building the confidence of these boys and girls (our future). Who can compete? well every under 13 & 15 who are club members -we need you all.

I hope to give out info in the next few days about times etc, but we would appreciate if all coach’s prime their under 13′s & 15′s athletes to compete on the 15th and let us know who is available and what they wish to do.

Full event details are on the Kent web site www.kcaa.org.uk/

We will book a coach just for this match (Ashford) . It will be £5 a seat – times at present 10.00 in the normal place. Parents are most welcome, reminder that athletes will need food and drink and suitable clothing/footwear, plus the Bexley running vest with black shorts. (our Orange vest can be purchased at the club) help from officals and coaches on this day greatfully accepted.
Don’t forget to campain for that sixth olympic ring (ORANGE)
best wishes
